On Saturday, June 5 at 12:00 PM Diana Calderón will virtually present a bookmaking workshop as part of How I Became an Artista. In the workshop, students will learn about the democratic medium of bookmaking inspired by Mexican codices and architecture. Stop by the Phoenix Art Museum on Friday, June 4, 4:00–7:00 PM to pick up your free art kit. This program is free with registration.

Diana Calderón (b.Chihuahua, Mexico, 1981) is an interdisciplinary artist based in Phoenix. Raised in the borderlands of El Paso, Texas and Ciudad Juarez, Calderón earned a BFA from Arizona State University in 2008. She also studied bookmaking & printmaking in Cortona, Italy with the University of Georgia's Study Abroad Program and Printmaking at the University of Dallas. Calderón exhibits artwork nationally and internationally. Her artwork is a blend of traditional and contemporary techniques such as relief printmaking, bookmaking, sculptural installation, public and performance art. Calderón investigates her ancestral roots and personal migrant journey, referencing archaeological and architectural patterns and texture while using bi-national materials to create. In 2018, a partnership between CALA Alliance, ASU Art Museum & PAOS GDL allowed Calderón to live, create and exhibit her artwork in the Museo Taller José Clemente Orozco, the former home and studio of the famous Mexican muralist.
