Join us for an open studio with regional resident artist, Carolina Aranibar-Fernández. Aranibar-Fernández will present work-in-progress created during her residency October 4–December 10, 2021.
Aranibar-Fernández was selected as the 2021 regional resident artist in Phoenix for CALA's Residencias Artísticas residency program. CALA’s residency program is one of the only programs that exclusively foster Latinx artistic talent in the United States, providing artists with unparalleled resources that enable them to realize innovative, ambitious new work.
CALA organizes two residencies per year. Each residency cycle includes one regional, Arizona-based Latinx artist found through a yearly open call, and one national Latinx by invitation only. During their residency period, artists-in-residence are prompted to develop original, research-driven, innovative work. While in residence, artists are also encouraged to share and develop their ideas with the local community and are invited to be part of public programs and community engagements.
Carolina Aranibar-Fernandez, born and raised in La Paz- Bolivia, currently lives and works in Arizona, U.S. Her practice addresses geopolitical concerns of exploitation, as it relates to natural resource control and the invisible labor that supplies global trade. Drawing references from myths and oral story telling; her work interweaves textiles, video, pottery to create multimedia installations that explore historical and contemporary forms of labor, extractivism, and the destruction of Mother Earth. Aranibar-Fernandez’s recent work has been exhibited at the National Museum of Art in Bolivia, New York, Qatar, and in the 2017 Kathmandu triennial in Nepal. Received an M.F.A from Virginia Commonwealth University and a B.F.A from the Kansas City Art Institute.
