Join the Phoenix Art Museum and CALA Alliance for the next Make It! Meet artist Sam Frésquez and gather inspiration from her artwork in Desert Rider to design your own beaded racing flag. Learn about her process to create Rainbow Warrior, a functional driving suit covered in glass seed beads, and discover the NASCAR traditions that influence Frésquez’s work. Participants of all ages/abilities are invited to create a beaded work of art to take home. All materials provided.

About the Artist
Sam Frésquez is a Phoenix-based interdisciplinary artist whose work explores how we present ourselves, or how we see ourselves represented (or not represented) in the mainstream. Frésquez utilizes culturally and historically significant materials including hair, jewelry, found footage, and text in her artwork. In addition to having her work on view at Phoenix Art Museum, that artist has exhibited at institutions such as the Tucson Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. Frésquez is the current regional artist in residence at CALA Alliance and has been the recipient of artist residencies at Xico Galeria, the Haystack Mountain School, New York Arts Practicum, Vermont Studio Center, and MASS MoCA. Frésquez is represented by Lisa Sette Gallery.
